Import Requirements for IT Equipment in Italy

If you are thinking of venturing into the Italian market and expanding your IT equipment supplies, the time is now.

Italy offers various government incentives such as tax credits for R&D, capital goods investments, and the patent box regime.

These benefits lower the cost of importing advanced ICT equipment, including network infrastructure, servers, and AI technologies.

Let’s dive deeper into the import requirements for IT equipment in Italy and the role of Blackthorne IOR in the importation.

3 Key IT Equipment Import Requirements in Italy

Here are the three key requirements to fulfill when importing ICT equipment to Italy:

1. Electrical and Wireless Equipment Compliance

IT equipment imported to Italy must bear the CE mark, signifying compliance with EU directives, including:

  • Low-Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU): Ensures equipment within specific voltage limits protects users from mechanical, electrical, and thermal hazards
  • EMC Directive (2014/30/EU): Ensures electrical and electronic equipment is not affected by, or does not generate electronic disturbance
  • Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU: sets essential health, electromagnetic compatibility, and safety requirements and the efficient use of the radio spectrum when placing radio equipment on the market.
  • RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU): Controls the usage of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE)

To ensure compliance, EEE equipment must undergo laboratory testing and CE marking (certification) before entering the Italian market.

2. Customs Requirements

Here are the customs requirements you must fulfill when importing IT equipment to Italy:

  • EORI Registration: importers must obtain an EORI number to facilitate EU customs operations, including lodging customs declarations
  • Customs Declarations: An import declaration (Single Administrative Document) must accompany non-EU imports. The SAD is filed once the equipment is submitted to customs officials
  • Pre-arrival Declaration: importers must submit an electronic Entry Summary Declaration (ENS) to customs authorities before equipment arrival.
